Why would a college give a student a prompt like this?

"Daddy-o", "Far Out", "Gnarly": the list of slang terms goes on and on. Sadly, most of these aren’t so "fly" anymore – “as if!” Name an outdated slang from any decade or language that you'd bring back and explain why you totally “dig it.” – Inspired by Napat Sakdibhornssup, Class of 2028 (University of Chicago, Fall 2025 Application)

(Gasp!)

As an alternative, you will undoubtedly encounter a question like "Why this major?" or "Why this university/college?"

Consider that, for college admissions, standardized tests (here's looking at you, SAT and ACT), and grades (GPA) will undoubtedly play a significant role when an admissions counselor reviews your application, but those only present you - the student - in two dimensions. Activities, accomplishments, essays, and portfolios are all chances to showcase your three-dimensionality as a person! This is especially crucial if you are a student who is accustomed to receiving high grades and outstanding SAT/ACT scores. After all, how do you stand out from the crowd when applying to schools that accept lots of students just like you?

Now consider this: when did you begin looking at these essay prompts? Do you know which colleges require which essays? The solution: prioritize college essays in the summer before your senior year of high school. This is particularly important when considering several colleges, which is something we sincerely hope you will do (we generally advise applying to ten or more colleges). When working with a student on their essays, it is not uncommon for a "drinking from a firehose" expression to emerge, as this is heady stuff, and it’s not always easy to know or understand exactly where to begin. Well - where to start?!
